What is Shilajit
In layman terms, Shilajit is a thick tar-like chewy substance that oozes from rocks in certain parts of the world. The origin of Shilajit is the plants and herbs that go through a natural transition process due to climatic changes. Nobody exactly knows the transition period but it certainly takes decades to convert the plants and herbs into what we call Shilajit. Shilajit contains more than 85 minerals and compounds. Fulvic acid is the most important ingredient of Shilajit. It is produced as a result of the decomposition of organic substances. Fulvic acid has a number of properties, such as energy boosting, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and metal dissolving (into ions) properties. A pure sample of Shilajit contains more than 60% Fulvic acid. Other important Shilajit ingredients include iron, calcium, potassium, zinc, copper, magnesium, manganese, chromium, vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin E, dibenzo-alpha pyrone, silicon, antimony, silver, sulfur, retinol, iodine, humic acid, oxalic acid, benzoic acid, tannic acid, glycosides, and phenolic acid.

Shilajit Types
Shilajit is rarely found in mountainous regions. Although it is found only in few parts of the world, the quality of Shilajit is not same everywhere. The following factors greatly influence Shilajit quality.
- Soil quality
- Rocks topology
- Temperature (Climate)
- Humidity
- Altitude (Height from sea level)
- Surrounding environment
Based on these factors, Shilajit can be divided into following four types.
Gold Shilajit: Gold Shilajit also known as Savrana when dissolved in water becomes reddish in color
Silver Shilajit: Silver Shilajit is white in color. It is also known as Rajat
Copper Shilajit: Cooper (also called Tamra) is blue in color
Iron Shilajit: It is brownish-black in color (locally known as Lauha)
Among all the Shilajits, Gold grade is the highest rated Shilajit because of its qualities. Gold Shilajit reserves are mostly found in Himalayan ranges. Himalayan Healing Shilajit is a gold grade Shilajit.
Shilajit Benefits
Shilajit May Slow Down Ageing: One of the best characteristic of Shilajit is its anti-ageing properties. Fulvic acid in Shilajit can supply nutrients deep inside the body cells. Cells that are otherwise unable to take food and die may live longer with the proper nutrients supplied through Fulvic acid. Thus, it can be safely assumed that Shilajit may help in slowing down the ageing factors in human body.
Shilajit Helps with Chronic Fatigue: People suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome feel tiredness, pain, poor cognition, and bad sleep. Shilajit may help in reducing chronic fatigue in humans. The lab experiments were performed on rats suffering from similar problems. A great improvement was observed in the physical health of rats suffering from fatigue and tiredness.
Shilajit May Boost Fertility in Men: According to World Health Organization (WHO) report, 48.5 million couples worldwide are unable to have a child. Every 1 out of 3 infertility cases is due to Male infertility problems. There are many factors that contribute to the male infertility issue. Less number of sperms and their mobility are one of the key causes of male infertility. The research has proved that Shilajit can enhance the male fertility to a greater extent by overcoming the sperms quantity and mobility problems. Shilajit contains more than 85 minerals and naturally occurring compounds. These natural substances play an important role in healing the human body by fulfilling the deficiencies. The proper use of Shilajit increases the factors that contribute to male fertility, increasing the overall chances of conceiving and giving birth to a healthy baby.
Shilajit May Reduce Inflammation: High level of neutrophils is responsible for tissue damage and increase in inflammation in the body. Shilajit has the ingredients like Potassium that may help in reducing the inflammatory factors in the body, such as cytokines.
Shilajit May Help Fight Addictions: In a lab experiment, mice were given Shilajit dosage to study their addictive behavior. The experiment results showed that mice were able to quit the addictive behavior. From the experiments, it can be concluded that Shilajit can help in curbing the bad addictions.
Shilajit May Fight Bacteria: Benzoic acid in Shilajit has the anti-bacterial properties. Regular use of Shilajit may help in fighting the stomach and gut bacteria.
Shilajit May Improve Memory: Shilajit has more than 85 minerals. Some of these minerals are beneficial for brain health. Proper use of Shilajit may help in improving the brain power (memory).
Shilajit May Help with Alzheimer’s: People suffering from Alzheimer are found to have clusters of protein in the brain. This protein, also called taufibrils, increases the problem. Shilajit has the ability to reduce these clusters of proteins that are dangerous for the brain.
Shilajit May Help in High Altitudes: Shilajit May Maintain Oxygen Level: Fulvic acid in Shilajit has the tendency of supplying the nutrients deep inside the cells. With proper use of Shilajit, the body may be able to absorb more iron. Since the iron level determines the amount of oxygen in the body, better iron level means more oxygen in the body. Better oxygen level is very helpful in high altitude sickness.
Shilajit May Repair Damaged Skin: Shilajit contains Vitamin C and E. Both are a powerful source retaining moisture in the tissues and repairing the damaged body cells.
Shilajit May Help in Detoxification: Fulvic acid has the ability to dissolve the heavy metals into ions. The removal of metals from the body in the shape of ions reduces the body toxins. A pure sample of Shilajit contains more than 60% Fulvic acid. Therefore, good quality Shilajit can be used for body cleansing from toxins.
Shilajit May Reduce Stress and Anxiety: Experiments were performed on the animals (rats) to see the effect of Shilajit on stress and anxiety. The results showed that rats with proper dosage of Shilajit lived stress free and without anxiety as compare to others. Shilajit may help humans live a stress free life.
Shilajit May Heal Wounds Quickly: Shilajit has the anti-inflammatory properties. Copper, Retinol, and Vitamin B have the tendency to boost the healing factors. Shilajit contains all these minerals that may speed up the healing process.
Shilajit May Produce Healthy Enzymes: Glutathione, Superoxide Dismutase, and Catalase enzymes are considered as first line of defense of the body. Iron, Manganese, and Molybdenum in Shilajit can produce these enzymes.
Shilajit Quality Test
Following are three simple ways to test the authenticity and quality of Shilajit.
(1) Add some quantity of Shilajit product in a glass of water and stir it for some time. If the product completely dissolves, see the color of the water. If the color is golden, dark reddish, or brown; the claimed product is Shilajit. Now pour the dissolved water on a white piece of cloth that should only pass the water. If there are no elements found on the cloth after pouring the Shilajit water, the Shilajit has no impurities in it.
(2) The second easy way to test the quality and authenticity of Shilajit is the chewing a piece of Shilajit in the front teeth. If you feel any grit in the teeth, the Shilajit is either not 100% Shilajit or it contains impurities that can harm your body.
(3) Shilajit does not catch flame on fire. If you try to burn a pure Shilajit, it will convert into ash but does not catch a flame.
How to Consume Shilajit
Shilajit can be consumed in liquid or solid form. The easiest way of consuming Shilajit is by dissolving it in a glass of water or milk. The recommended amount is 250mg twice a day.
Water vs Milk
Since Shilajit has the tendency to increase the body temperature to a very minute level, it is recommended to take Shilajit with water in summer and milk in winter season.
Best Dosage Time
The best time to take Shilajit is the early morning or day time before having breakfast or lunch. Try not to eat anything for sometime after consuming Shilajit. The overall effect of Shilajit slows down when it is consumed with other food. In such case, the dosage level can be increased.
